ORB 15‑min with 5‑min volume operates long and short. The strategy seeks breakout of the opening range with high volume on SPY during the regular session. In the training period it generated trades regularly but with a low win rate and consistent losses. The out‑of‑sample period behaved similarly, but losses intensified and the win rate deteriorated further. The consistency between both periods shows that the approach does not capture a profitable pattern under the conditions it was designed for. The verdict is rejected because the strategy produces net losses in both periods. Verdict: rejected, it was not profitable in training or out‑of‑sample. Exits: take profit at a price level, stop‑loss at a price level, short side: take profit at a price level and stop‑loss at a price level; automatic close at the end of the session if still open; at most one trade per day. Net results with a 0.10% per‑trade cost. Past results do not guarantee future results.

1. Opening Range Breakout (ORB) Time frame: 5 min or 15 min Suggested symbols: SPY, QQQ, AAPL, TSLA, NVDA Validation range: last 6‑12 months Rule: Mark the high and low of the first 15‑30 minutes. Buy breakout of the high with volume above average; sell breakout of the low. Close everything before market close or at target 1:1.5 / 1:2.
What we assumed
- Time frame: 5m was chosen from the two options (5m or 15m).
- Opening range: the first 15 minutes (09:30‑09:45 ET) of the proposed 15‑30 minutes were selected.
- Validation range: the idea states 6‑12 months; the last 12 months were used.
- Entry window: Monday to Friday 09:45 to 15:30 ET, because the idea does not specify. The range exists from 09:45.
- Volume above average: current bar volume greater than the average volume of the previous 20 bars (offset 1). Early in the session the average includes bars from the prior session.
- The volume filter was also applied to the sell side for symmetry; the idea only mentions it for the buy.
- The idea gives no stop: it was APPROXIMATED with the opposite edge of the opening range (minimum for buys, maximum for sells) as the stop level.
- Target: 1:2 was chosen from the two options (1:1.5 or 1:2) as a risk‑reward multiple relative to the stop.
- The early exit before the end of the session is applied automatically by the engine, so there is no timeout.
- The text mentions SPY, QQQ, AAPL, TSLA, NVDA; SPY was validated (the basket allows testing the rest).
- It was tested in the requested range: 2025‑10‑28 to 2026‑07‑10 (training) and 2026‑07‑11 to 2026‑10‑27 (out‑of‑sample).
