The opening range operates long and short, looking for breaks of the first 15‑minute session range with VWAP confirmation. In the training period, the strategy generated trades regularly but showed consistent losses, with a low hit rate. The out‑of‑sample period behaved similarly: it continued losing money with a comparable hit rate, although the maximum drawdown was lower. The strategy failed to generate a positive edge in either period, indicating that the breakout approach with VWAP filter was not profitable under the tested conditions. Verdict: rejected, not profitable in training or out of sample. Exits: take profit at a price level, stop‑loss at a price level; short side: take profit at a price level and stop‑loss at a price level; automatic close at the end of the session if still open; at most one trade per day. Net results after a 0.10% per‑trade cost. Past results do not guarantee future results.

Strategy tested
At 9:30 a.m. New York time, on a 5‑minute chart, it marks the high and low of the first 15 minutes of the session (opening range). It waits for the price to break one of the two extremes and for the candle to close fully outside the range (not just the wick). Before entering, it checks the VWAP (volume‑weighted average price of the day): if it breaks upward, the price must be above the VWAP; if it breaks downward, it must be below. If this condition is not met, no trade is entered. If all conditions are met, it enters at the opening of the next candle. The stop‑loss is half the initial range. The profit target is 2:1 (double the stop‑loss distance).
What we assumed
- Risk‑reward target 1:2 calculated from entry and stop.
- Trading window 09:30‑15:30 ET, Monday to Friday: the system calculates so that levels and price zones do not use candles from the previous session (only size references, such as an average range, can read them).
- Both directions are modeled: the opposite (short) uses the same rules with mirrored levels. The engine allows at most one trade per day, the first signal of either side.
